If It Is Dead Bury It...Part 2

Merry CHRISTmas!   I trust that you and your family are looking forward to a great CHRISTmas!  I want to continue this week with the thought...IF IT IS DEAD BURY IT!

Years ago a High School Principal called the band director and band president into his office.  The band at the school had gotten down to only a few members and had become ineffective.   He looked at these ladies and said, "Ladies, the band is dead and today I am going to bury it.   Please give your keys, do you have any questions?"

That is what we are talking about.   Prayerfully and honestly looking at the programs and ministries of our church to see how effective they are.   Every ministry and program of our church should be functioning to fulfill the mission of our church in particular the mission statement of our church.

I want to talk this week about a clear and concise "Mission Statement" for your church.   If you do not have one in place and in print, I urge you to do this.   IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE MISSION STATMENT OF THE CHURCH BE KEPT BEFORE THE PEOPLE.   This can be done several ways.   Begin the New Year with it printed on the front cover (if you do your own) or in your bulletin ( if you use bulletins with art work  already on the front cover).   Continually keep it in your bulletin all year.  Place it on the screen with the announcements that are run before the service (if you use projectors and screens).  Print  it attractively and place in all your Sunday School class rooms and other high traffic areas in your building.  You can make mention of this from the pulpit as you begin the New Year.  Draw attention and get your people focused on the "MISSION" for your church as the New Year begins.   As you get further in the New Year continue to periodically mention the mission statement of your church.   KEEP IT BEFORE YOUR PEOPLE!

For those who do not have a mission statement or may need revive your current mission statement let me share these thoughts.   First, your mission statement should be Biblically based.   God has given the mission of the church in what we know as the Great Commission.   The mission of every church, regardless of size or location is the same.   WE ARE TO WIN THE LOST AND DISCIPLE THE SAVED.   The mission of the church is to share the good news of the Gospel with a lost world.   Our churches can be involved in several ministries that gives us that opportunity.   But the main objective of the church in any ministry is to reach out with the Gospel.   Then, once people are reached with the Gospel disciple or teach them.

I was with a Pastor in meeting a few months ago that had began a Youth Ministry on Wednesday Night.   Teenagers were brought in and feed a meal then the Youth Pastor would preach the Gospel to them.   Some of the members of the church were critical of this program.   They did not understand why they were feeding these kids.   He asked me if I would share about our ministry.   I did and this is what I said.   The message of the Gospel will never change.   It was, it is, and it will be, the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.   That is the good news that we must constantly and continually share with the world.   But the methods that we use in sharing that message can change and sometimes must change.   Hear me loud and clear...The Message NEVER changes!   But if we are going to be effective and reach a lost world we may need to change our methods.   If the methods that you are using is not being effective and you are not seeing people come to faith in Christ...IF IT IS DEAD BURY IT!   Pray and seek the Lord about what HE would have you to do.   HE may lead you to do something outside the box of our routine rituals.   If it is the LORD, step out of the box my brother and go for it!   It is better to be outside the box with the Lord than inside the box without HIS blessings and favor.

I want to add this as we ponder so that I am understood clearly.   The Lord will never direct you to do anything that is contrary to HIS WORD!   The Lord will never direct us to reach out through ministry to reach a lost world that will compromise the truth and teaching of the Bible.   We will never be lead by the Lord to step outside of the BIBLE, but we may be lead of the Lord to step outside the box of our  man-made traditions, hang ups, and religious rituals!

Look forward to continuing next week.   Until then again, I trust that you and yours have a wonderful CHRISTmas!

Because of HIM!
